Betty Barnhart age 86 of Springfield passed away Wednesday February 26, 2014 at the Springfield Rehab and Healthcare Center in Springfield.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday March 1, 2014 at the Greenlawn Funeral Home East in Springfield with Pastor Brandin Melton and Rev Richard Bushey officiating. Burial will be in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. Saturday until the time of service at the funeral home.
She was born November 2, 1927 in Meta, the daughter of Albert Lee and Elizabeth Tennison Barnhart. On November 1, 1947 at Dixon, she married Wayne Barnhart. He survives. Also surviving are daughters Diane Neeley (Howard) of Republic, Cathy Veach (John) of Bowling Green; son David Barnhart (Karlette) of Lexington, KY; daughter-in-law Stephanie Barnhart of Ozark; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren and 2 step great grandchildren. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and sister-in-laws.
She is preceded in death by son Greg Barnhart on October 26, 2013; granddaughter Monica Jean Barnhart; 4 sisters and 3 brothers.
Betty was raised in the Meta area and graduated from Vienna High School. She attended Southwest Baptist College in Bolivar and taught school in a one room school house at Carnes Campground School in the Meta area. Following her marriage she and Wayne lived in Columbia, Iberia and Waynesville before moving to Springfield in June of 1975.
She worked as a secretary in the Iberia and Waynesville schools.
She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene where she taught Sunday school and served for many years as the church treasurer. Betty had the gift of hospitality as she and Wayne opened their home to many through the years.
