Obituary

Christine Hattie Luebbering, age 77, of Meta, died Sunday, November 16, 2014, at Arbors of Westbrook in Jefferson City. She was born in St. Anthony, Missouri on June 2, 1937, daughter of the late Henry and Catherine (Holtmeyer) Engelmeyer. Christine married James John Luebbering, who preceded her in death on May 27, 2012, at St. Anthony Catholic Church in St. Anthony on October 17, 1959.

Christine enjoyed quilting, gardening and cooking. She served as the lead cook for many of the community picnics, weddings, funerals and other events and was a member of the Meta quilting group. She took great pride in helping with the picnic, especially supervising the chicken-frying team, and in the beautiful quilts that were auctioned each year. Her ability to make a "feast of plenty" for any gathering or visitor was legendary among her family and friends.

Christine was a member and long-time officer of the Citizen's Civic League and also a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Meta. Always a partner with her husband, she also assisted him behind the scenes in his many civic and religious volunteer services.

She is survived by five children: Helen Osman and husband John of Hyattsville, Maryland; Arthur Luebbering of Jefferson City; Karen Struemph and husband Paul of St. Thomas; Rodney Luebbering and wife Amy of Meta; and Scott Luebbering and wife Sarah of Meta; 13 grandchildren: David Osman and wife Erin of Austin, Texas; Katie Richards and husband Paul of Shepherdstown, West Virginia; Sarah Rose and husband Jimmy of Austin, Texas; Laurie Osman of Houston, Texas; Nathaniel Luebbering of Jefferson City; Dana Strueby of Kansas City; Becky Otto and husband Justin of St. Elizabeth; Renee Struemph and Erin Struemph of St. Thomas; Morgan Luebbering and Jacob Luebbering of Meta; Colby Kliethermes and McKenna Kliethermes of Meta; seven great-grandchildren: Brigid and Emma Richards, Caitlin and James Osman, Patrick and Brian Rose, and Tyson Otto; one sister, Elizabeth Schaeffer Watson of Tennessee and two brothers, Bernard Engelmeyer and John Engelmeyer, both of St. Anthony.

Along with her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one infant grandchild; two brothers, Herman Engelmeyer and Steve Engelmeyer; and one sister, Gertrude Rustemeyer.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, November 21, 2014, at 11 a.m. at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Meta. Rev. Jeremy Secrist will celebrate. Interment will be held in St. Cecilia Cemetery in Meta.

Visitation will be held Thursday, November 20, from 4 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 4 p.m., at the church.
