David John "Dave" Kalaf, age 62, of Meta, went to be with the Lord surrounded by his family on Tuesday, December 9, 2008, at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital in Columbia. He was born in Jefferson City on November 8, 1946, son of the late Joseph and Lilly Mary (Owen) Kalaf.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of Vietnam. He served his country from October 1964 until August 1983 and was a Chief Petty Officer. He retired from the Missouri Veterans Affairs/Commission.
He enjoyed cars and was a member of the Classic Mustang Club. He was an avid supporter of the Ronald McDonald House in Columbia. He was a former deputy sheriff of Osage County.
Dave was a lifelong resident of Meta. He enjoyed his family and many friends and volunteering for the Meta Fire and Rescue. When he was no longer physically able to assist on calls, he cooked a nice meal for the volunteer rescue teams when they had classes for certification and other studies in Meta. He knew these very dedicated volunteers would be hungry at the end of their workday schedule.
Dave is the "favorite uncle" to nearly 50 nieces and nephews. He loved them dearly and always remembered their birthdays, baptisms, graduations, and weddings. He was available for the kids and encouraged them to do their best in school and to be good. For 20 years or more, Dave hosted a "Back-to-School Bar-B-Q" in his home. The kids looked forward to this big event.
Survivors include two brothers, Anthony J. Kalaf and wife Cheryl, Philip J. Kalaf and wife Cindy all of Jefferson City; five sisters, JoAnn Farris and husband Joe of Kansas City, Helen Marie Jaegers and husband Robert, Eva C. Kalaf, Sara Jaegers and husband Charles, Emily Eggen and husband Gary all of Jefferson City; one aunt, Evelyn Maroun and husband Paul of Kansas City; one uncle, Fred Damas of Kansas City; nieces and nephews; and a multitude of cousins.
