Obituary

Dennis L. Shackelford, age 64, of Brumley, died Sunday, June 15, 2008, at his home. He was born in Iberia on September 23, 1943, son of Raymond Clay and Altha Mae (Shelton) Shackelford. His mother preceded him in death on June 27, 1973. On June 16, 1978, in Brumley, he was married to Glenda Mae Phillips, who survives at the home.

He was a Navy veteran of Vietnam serving his country from the fall of 1965 through the spring of 1966. During his service in Vietnam as a Navy hospital corpsman performing medical evacuations in the combat area of operations for the U.S. Marine Corps, he earned an air medal and a ribbon in lieu of a second air medal award. He was an avid golfer, hunter, and fisherman and truly loved the outdoors. Except for his time in the military service, he lived in and around the Iberia area, a place of people and land he loved.

He was baptized in the Christian Church on the 31st day of March 1956 by Rev. John D. Jenkins in the Tavern Creek near Iberia. He was a member of Iberia First Christian Church.

He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree through Lincoln University in Jefferson City on the 29th of July 1973. He worked for 30 years at Ft. Leonard Wood. He was a supervisory management analyst whose team(s) was instrumental in determining the manpower and equipment required to support the transfer of the U.S. Army Engineer School, the Military Police School, and the Chemical Schools to Ft. Leonard Wood to eventually form the Maneuver Support Center at Ft. Leonard Wood.

Other survivors include his father, Raymond Shackelford and wife Barb of Eldon; one brother, Dorsey Shackelford and wife Sharon of Jefferson City; one sister, Kathy Jeffries and husband Jim of Kansas City; and several nieces and nephews and other family and friends.

Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 17, at Rekus Funeral Home in Iberia. Services will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Lee Todd officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Robinett Cemetery near Brumley.
