Edna Allene Shelton Kinder peacefully passed on May 16, 2015, just one month before her 95th birthday. Visitation will be Thursday, May 21, from 5:00-7:00 p.m., with the Eastern Star service at 6:00 p.m., at Fancher-Rekus Funeral Home in Iberia. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 22, at Brays Advent Christian Church near Iberia. Interment to follow at Union Cemetery.
Allene was born June 15, 1920 to Allen Taylor and Montie Dale Humphrey Shelton. She was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings: Ruby Robertson, Margie Clark, Walter Shelton, and Helen Shelton. Allene graduated from the Iberia Academy, a private high school, and Drury College, Springfield, MO where she majored in Latin, Greek and History, graduating summa cum laude in 1942. On June 16, 1947 Allene married her high school sweet heart, Okley Kinder, who preceded her in death after 62 years of marriage.
Allene's professional career included teaching appointments in Fair Grove, Crocker and Iberia, MO. She also served as acting principal in Iberia and superintendent of schools in the St. Elizabeth school district. Mrs. Kinder's teaching significantly impacted hundreds of lives. Her three top priorities were always family, church, and teaching.
In addition to her career, Allene served in numerous volunteer roles, many of them for her church and its national and regional boards. She taught Sunday school at Brays Advent Christian Church for many years and co-led the youth group with husband, Okley. Allene served as president of the Iberia Academy Alumni Association and was the Iberia chairperson for Hospice. After moving to John Knox Village, near Kansas City, she served as a volunteer librarian. Allene is a 60+ year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a charter member of the Iberia VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries.
Allene is survived by two daughters Dr. Charlotte Shelton and spouse Dr. Jim Moore of Kansas City, MO and Patti Fehlig and husband Mark Fehlig of Snellville, GA, as well as four beloved grandchildren: Dr. Matthew Shelton (Jenny), Laura Shelton Garfield (Chuck), Meghan Fehlig Mitman (Alexander), and Mollie Fehlig. She was the proud great grandmother of Will, Jack and Sam Shelton; Charlie and Clarissa Garfield, and Clara and Hannah Mitman.
