Ellen Lorena Baker, age 97, of Miller County Care and Rehabilitation Center, formerly of Ulman, passed away Thursday, August 14, 2008, at Miller County Care and Rehabilitation Center, Tuscumbia. She was born on March 31, 1911, in Ray County, Missouri, the daughter of Homer Lee and Myrtle Maggie Clevenger. She was preceded in death by her parents and first husband, Dr. Paul Lewis Welch, along with two brothers, Garnett Clevenger and Almus Eugene Clevenger.
Lorena, as most folks called her, worked in the laboratory of a hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, and that is where she met her first husband, Dr. Paul Welch. They resided in Harrisonville, Missouri, and Creighton, Missouri, for a time, eventually moving to a farm near Ulman in 1966. Dr. Welch passed away in 1969. Ellen Lorena shared a love of farm life with William S. Baker of Ulman and they married in 1971. Stanley and Lorena were happily married for 37 years. She took an active interest in all school activities her son was involved in, and served as president of the PTA in Creighton. She also had a love of animals. While in Creighton, she bred and sold registered wire haired terrier dogs. She loved and cared for dozens of cats and dogs in her life. Ellen Lorena was also a music lover and encouraged her son Robert to pursue music, purchasing his first guitar and drum set for him.
Ellen Lorena Baker was a member of the Brumley Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, William Stanley Baker, a resident of Miller County Care and Rehabilitation Center; one son, Robert and his wife Donna, of Dubuque, Iowa; one granddaughter, Misty Woolf and husband Chris of Dubuque, Iowa; and a niece, Shirley Nolker and husband Gene, of Lawson, Missouri.
The surviving family especially wants to thank Dr. C. Haggerty for the loving care he provided for so many years, Rhonda Chapman of Social Services, and thank you to each and every member of the assisted living staff and the skilled staff of Miller County Care and Rehabilitation Center for their kindness, comfort and care.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. on Monday, August 18, at Rekus Funeral Home in Iberia. Services will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Bro. Gene Edwards officiating. Interment will be in Hawkins Cemetery near Brumley.
