Fred H. Schaffer, age 86, of Iberia, passed away on Monday, December 1, 2025, at his home. He was born in St. Anthony on February 15, 1939, son of the late John William and Emma (Bax) Schaffer. On December 26, 1964, in St. Anthony, Fred was united in marriage to Brenda McCubbin, who survives at their home.
Fred was a loving husband, dad, and grandfather who cherished every moment spent with his family. His cheerful personality brought joy and laughter to those around him, and he especially loved being surrounded by family and friends. Fred’s warmth and sense of humor will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Fred was very active in his community and he never shied away from taking on leadership roles throughout his life. He served on several local committees and volunteered regularly at community events, always eager to lend a helping hand.
He served his country in the United States Airforce from 1960 until his honorable discharge in 1964. Following the war, he went to work in civil service, dedicating much of his career to working as a construction estimator. Fred was raised in the Catholic Faith. His commitment to his beliefs was evident in the way he lived his life, always guided by faith and compassion for others.
In addition to his loving wife, Brenda Schaffer, he is also survived by two children, Stephanie Kane Parrish and husband Tony and Jason Schaffer and wife Jill; grandchildren, Jackson Schaffer, Darcie (Brady) Kane, Caroline Schaffer, Abbie Kane, and Olivia Schaffer; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of family and beloved friends.
In addition to his parents, John and Emma Schaffer, he was also preceded in death by his granddaughter, Sophie Schaffer; eight siblings, John Schaffer, Roman Schaffer, Victor Schaffer, Coletta Otto, Margaret Luzetti, Albert Schaffer, James Schaffer, and Matilda Wall.
A visitation honoring the life of Fred Schaffer will be held from 1 to 3 p.m., with a Celebration of Life at 3 p.m. on Friday, December 5, at Fancher-Rekus Funeral Home with Stan Way officiating.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the St. Anthony Cemetery or to the Iberia Cemetery.
