Gerald O. Hensley, age 88, of Fort Myers, Florida, formerly of Iberia, passed away on Friday, August 8, 2014, in Fort Myers, Florida. He was born in Iberia on December 1, 1925, son of the late Arkley and Belle (Clark) Hensley. On July 26, 1946 in St. Louis Gerald married Emogene "Jean" Hopkins, who survives at the home.
As a member of the "Greatest Generation" Gerald proudly served in the United States Navy during WWII from March 2, 1944 until his honorable discharge on May 11, 1946. In 1951 Gerald and his family moved to Overland Park, Kansas, where he owned and operated Overland Trucking Company Incorporated for 42 years until retiring in 1988. In 2011 Gerald and Jean moved to Florida.
Gerald was a member of Cypress Lakes Baptist Church in Fort Myers, FL. He was also a member of the V.F.W and Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed traveling, hunting, and fishing.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Hensley; one daughter, Pam DeTrou and husband Val of Fort Myers, Florida; one granddaughter, Dawn Freesen and husband O.R. of LeBelle, Florida; one great-grandson, Michael Britten of Jacksonville, Illinois; two step-grandchildren, Lisa DeTrou of Berlin, New Jersey and Dirk DeTrou and wife Karen of Beverlywood, California; and three step-great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Julia, and Ella.
Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, August 15, at Fancher-Rekus Funeral Home in Iberia. Gary Humphrey will officiate. Interment with military honors under the direction of the Iberia VFW Post 6167 and American Legion Post 105 will be in Hickory Point Cemetery near Iberia.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, August 14 at the funeral home.
