Gerard "Butch" Blomberg, age 70, of St. Elizabeth, passed away surrounded by family and friends on Monday, December 18, 2023, at Capital Region Medical Center in Jefferson City. He was born in Jefferson City on July 9, 1953, son of the late Henry and Alma (Lueckenhoff) Blomberg.
A lifelong resident of St. Elizabeth, Butch attended elementary school in St. Anthony, and then graduated from St. Elizabeth High School. Following high school Butch attended technical college in Eldon, Missouri with an emphasis in automotive technologies where he later served as an assisting instructor. On June 2, 1973, he married his high school sweetheart, Joyce (Huhman) who survives at home.
Butch worked on cars for 40+ years in Jefferson City, Meta, and the surrounding area. He also served on the Community Center Board, as an Emergency Medical Technician for COMM-Unity Ambulance, a firefighter with the St. Elizabeth Volunteer Fire Department and Meta Fire Department. For 30 years Gerard devoted countless hours serving his community as Fire Chief of the St. Elizabeth Fire Protection District, stepping down this past June. His wealth of knowledge and passion for the fire department was a huge asset to the community and he was instrumental in establishing the St. Elizabeth Fire Protection District and building a new fire station.
A camper, hunter, and fisherman, Butch loved the outdoors and his rat terriers. He was a faithful member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, where he served as an usher and taught CCD class for numerous years.
In addition to his loving wife, Joyce Blomberg, he is also survived by three sons, Jerry (Kourtney) Blomberg of Centertown, Michael Blomberg of Dixon, and John (Jenny) Blomberg of Springfield; grandchildren Collin, Gavin, Kalley, Danika, Simon, Zoey, Corbin and Zita; eight siblings, Dolores (Tony) Libbert, Carolyn (Harold) Brockes, Pam (Terry) Libbert, Ronnie (Diane) Blomberg, Sam (Becky) Blomberg, Nancy (Dave) Loethen, Teresa (Carl) Heckemeyer, and Sid (Patsy) Blomberg; and numerous nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Alma, and sister, Mary (Blomberg) Clark.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 22, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in St. Elizabeth with Fr. Christopher Aubuchon officiating. Interment will be held in St. Lawrence Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., on Thursday, December 21, at the St. Elizabeth Community Center.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the St. Elizabeth Fire Fighters Association or the National Kidney Foundation.
Arrangements are under the direction of Fancher-Rekus Funeral Home in St. Elizabeth.
