Obituary

Harold Wilfred Libbert, age 78, of Meta, passed away at his home surrounded by family on Monday, February 5, 2024.  He was born in St. Thomas on April 17, 1945, son of the late Lionel John and Arharta Anna (Wieberg) Libbert.  On May 20, 1967, Harold was united in marriage to Norma Jean Jaegers, who survives at their home.

Harold attended St. Elizabeth R-V High School.  Following graduation, Harold honorably served in the United States Army with the 101st Airborne Division.  He possessed a strong work ethic and was a jack-of-all-trades.  Throughout his working career he was employed for various businesses including McGraw Edison, Lincoln University, Bush and Ladda Painting Company, and Meta Motor Company. Harold has been self-employed the past 30 plus years owning his own business as a well pump repairman and installer, backhoe and dump truck service, track hoe and trencher service, plumber, and general repairman contractor.  After years of hard work and perseverance, Harold finished building his family cabin.

Harold was active in the Meta Community.  He served as the Mayor for the City of Meta for over 30 years and was also the City Alderman.  Additionally, he volunteered at the Meta Fire Department, served as an EMT for the COMM-UNITY Ambulance, was manager of the Civic League, officer of the Meta Senior Apartments, and Chief Water Operator for several area cities/towns.  Harold donated blood as often as he could and undertook his civic duty during election days volunteering his time as a poll judge.  He was a faithful and devoted member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Meta.

In addition to his loving wife, Norma Jean Libbert, he is also survived by three children, Marty Libbert, Mandi (Randy) Steinlage, and Micky Libbert; eight grandchildren, Clayton (Caley) Libbert, Colton Libbert, Cadyn Libbert, Kearra Steinlage, Cora Steinlage, Karina Steinlage, Jack Libbert, and Cami Libbert; two great-grandchildren, Henley and Abraham Libbert, with one great-grandchild on the way; four siblings, Anton (Dolores) Libbert, Terry (Pam) Libbert, Loyd (Dina) Libbert, and Betty Jean (Curtis) Kemna; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Rehagen, Darlene Bock, and Wanda (David) Sturtz; and numerous nieces, nephews, family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Bonnie and Sandy Libbert; father and mother-in-law, Norman and Delphine Jaegers; and two brothers-in-law, Dick Rehagen and Edward Bock.

Visitation will be held from 12 (noon) to 4 p.m., with a prayer service at noon, on Sunday, February 11, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Meta.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, February 12, at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Meta with Fr. Leonard Mukiibi officiating.  Interment with military honors will be held in St. Cecilia Cemetery.

Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Cecilia Cemetery Association.
