Obituary

James Dow Wall, age 89, of Jefferson City, passed away on Saturday, June 18, 2022, at his home with his daughters by his side.  He was born in Iberia on December 26, 1932, son of the late Dorsey and Clara (Miller) Wall.  On August 16, 1952, in St. Anthony, James was united in marriage to Mathilda "Tilly" Rosaline Schaffer, who preceded him in death on September 9, 2000.

James was a 1951 graduate of Iberia High School.  On February 4, 1953, he was drafted into the United States Army. He completed basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO and was later transferred to Dugway Proving Ground, Dugway, Utah, where he spent three years as a Personnel Specialist.  James spent another five years in the Army Reserves until he was honorably discharged in March 1961.  In April 1956, he began working for the United States Army in Ft. Leonard Wood as Civilian Supervisor for the Adjutant General, Military Personnel Division, Separations Branch, Processing Section until his retirement in December 1987.

James and Mathilda lived in St. Anthony from 1957 to 1989, at which time they moved to Mary's Home.  James moved to Jefferson City in 2002.

James loved the outdoors, gardening, cutting wood, playing cards (pitch), but most of all dancing.  He danced his entire life; dancing in his later years at the Eagles Club, American Legion, and Windstone Entertainment, where he made many special friendships.  James was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in St. Anthony and later St. Joseph Cathedral in Jefferson City.  He was also a member of the American Legion Roscoe Enloe Post 5 in Jefferson City.

He is survived by three daughters, Doris Farris of Jefferson City, Janice (Bruce) Finley of Columbia, and Tammy (Joe) Sanning of Taos; ten grandchildren, Charlotte Evers, Cathy Evers, Carla Kroll, Dennis Evers, Jared Finley, Jacob Finley, Natasha Bennett, Brittany Voss, Kalen Crawford, and Taylor Sanning; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; brother, Basil Wall of Iberia; brother-in-law, Fred (Brenda) Schaffer of Iberia; two sisters-in-law, Frieda Schaffer of North Carolina and Lee Ann Schaffer of Florida; numerous nieces and nephews; the families of Jeanne (Hackman) Lock and Ruth (Miller) Keown; and many other wonderful friends. .

In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by his brother, Finnis Wall; brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m., with Mass of Christian Burial immediately following at 11 a.m., on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in St. Anthony with Fr. Ignitius Nimwesiga officiating.  Interment with military honors will be held at St. Anthony Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Compassus Hospice Care, American Cancer Society MO, or a charity of the donor's choice.
