Obituary

Jean Edward Barnett, age 82, of Iberia, died Saturday, October 14, 2006, at Lake Regional Hospital. He was born in Hancock on August 14, 1924, son of Edmond Austin and Polly (Ponder) Barnett. On February 15, 1946, in Tuscumbia, he was married to Marjorie Louise Whittle, who preceded him in death on April 22, 2004.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was the last surviving charter member of the Iberia Saddle Club where he was a lifetime member. He was a member of the Carpenters Local #1253 in Fairbanks, Alaska, and the West Plains Wagon Club. He attended Hilltop Christian Church near Crocker. His lifelong love of horses was shared with his family and many friends.

Survivors include two sons, Charles Barnett and wife, Laura of Iberia, and Carl Barnett and wife, Sharon of San Francisco, California; two daughters, Charlene Parker and husband, Bob of Durant, Oklahoma, and Tammy Romans and husband, Pat of Fairbanks, Alaska; one brother, Buster Barnett of Iberia; two sisters, Mary Lou Cross of Brooksville, Florida, and Dola Shepherd of Foristell; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Carlos Barnett in 1959 and Troy Barnett in 2002; and one grandson, Greg Way.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 18, at Rekus Funeral Home in Iberia. Bro. Billy Claiborn will officiate. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery near Iberia.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.
