Jessie Venice Duncan, age 100, of Iberia, passed away Wednesday, January 12, 2011, at Miller County Care and Rehabilitation Center in Tuscumbia. She was born in Miller County on September 3, 1910, daughter of the late Saloman Lyon and Betty Mae (Wall) Cochran. On June 8, 1925, she married Luther William Duncan, who preceded her in death on December 10, 1991.
Granny Duncan to all who knew her lived her whole life in Miller County, were she seen it change from Horse and Buggy and coil oil lamps to paved roads, hydro electric, cellular phones, and many other changes. Her accomplishments were to never let a visitor leave her home without giving them something and never have a conversation without telling them "I love you". Venice was a member of the Mt. Union Church of Christ.
She is survived by two children, Betty Gilliam of Tuscumbia and Marjorie Sue Nelson of Iberia; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 27 great-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.
She was preceded in death by two children, Cordell Duncan and Rosalee Long; four grandchildren, Connie Smith, Jack Gilliam, Eddie Duncan, and Mike Nelson; and two great-grandchildren, Shawn Smith and Rodney Smith.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with services immediately following at 1 p.m., on Saturday, January 15, 2011, at Fancher-Rekus Funeral Home in Iberia. Bro. Gene Edwards will officiate. Interment will be in Mt. Union Cemetery near Brumley.
