John Lawrence Hammann, age 70, of Tuscumbia formerly of Meta, passed away on December 20, 2013, at University Hospital in Columbia. He was born in Jefferson City on March 9, 1943, son of the late Walter and Wilhelmina (Huhman) Hammann. On January 1, 2000, in Omaha, Nebraska, John married Bernice (Shonka) Shannon, who survives at the home.
John was a former police officer in Omaha, Nebraska and later worked as manager at Kraft D.C. Furniture. He loved the outdoors and was especially active on his land. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.
He is also survived by four daughters, Denise Martinez of Oakland, Iowa, Tara Vasquez of Omaha, Nebraska, Lisa Blenderman of Omaha, Nebraska, and Sherri Bender of Omaha, Nebraska; two sons, Jeff Bullock of Omaha, Nebraska, and Michael Shannon of Omaha, Nebraska; twelve grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, David Hammann and wife Mary Lou of Meta; and four sisters, Mary Wankum of Jefferson City, Pat Rufty and husband Sid of Raytown, Judy Parks and husband Gene of St. Charles, Illinois, and Eileen Volmert and husband Roger of St. Thomas.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Martha Tarwater and two brothers, Jim Hammann and Don Hammann.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., with a memorial service immediately following at 11 a.m., on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at Fancher-Rekus Funeral Home in Meta. Fr. Jeremy Secrist will officiate.
