Obituary

John E. Porter, age 81, of Brumley, died Tuesday, December 5, 2006, at his home. He was born in Bagnell on April 22, 1925, son of Charles and Opal (Robbins) Porter, both deceased. On August 1, 1959, in Brumley, he was married to Ruth Maxine Plemmons, who preceded him in death on July 28, 2001.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands in Alaska. He and his wife owned and operated Porters Service Station in Brumley for many years. He was a member of the Iberia American Legion Post 105, the Miller County Historical Society, and Hawkeye Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gospel singing. He traveled around to local towns selling apples.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne Porter and wife, Karen of Eldon, and Bill Capps of Jefferson City; three daughters, Helen "Cookie" Butler and husband, Jim of Richland, Freda Green and husband, Howard of Tuscumbia, and Donna Alexander of Olean; three sisters, Edna Witt of Bolivar, Wilma Simpson of Eldon, and Jean Cotten of Eldon; one brother, Arthur Porter of Lake Ozark; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 9, at Rekus Funeral Home in Iberia. Kenny Sullins will officiate. Interment with military honors will be in Hawkins Cemetery near Brumley.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.
