Obituary

Joseph Norbert Luebbering, age 98, of St. Thomas, passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2017, at his home.

Joe was a lifelong resident of St. Thomas. On April 2, 1919, he was born to John and Catherine Luebbering, the youngest of 11 siblings. The tales he told about growing up on the Osage River were priceless glimpses into another era. He helped his father farm with draft horses and mules. He was a farmer his entire life. Joe was a witness to the times when commerce was mainly done on the river.

He married Dorothy Grothoff, the love of his life, on January 27, 1948. They were married for 57 years when Dorothy passed away on their anniversary in 2005. To their union 10 children were born. They built the house, where he lived, constructed from timber from their farm. He may not have had an easy life by today's standards, but he was always grateful for what the land provided.

Joseph was a faithful member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and the St. Thomas Knights of Columbus for over 80 years.

He is survived by ten children; Phyllis Brooks, Gary Luebbering (Linda), Fred Luebbering (Noreen), Joyce Wieberg, Carolyn Mills (Michael), Sharon Krautmann (Kevin), Darlene Hurst (David), Mark Luebbering (Lauri), David Luebbering (Marlene), and Kristie Holtmeyer (Richard); 21 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren with one due in March 2018.

In addition to his parents and loving wife, Dorothy, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Millie Luebbering; two sons-in-law, Kenneth Wieberg and George Brooks; ten siblings, Louie, Henry, Herman, Leo, and Ben Luebbering, Elizabeth Lehman, Rose Kaiser, Cecelia Adrian, Agnes Strope, and Mary Herigon.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, November 22, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in St. Thomas with Fr. Jeremy Secrist officiating. Interment will be in St. Thomas Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 4 p.m., on Tuesday, November 21, at the church.

Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Thomas School.
