Obituary

Leonard F. Bax, age 91, of St. Anthony, passed away on Sunday, May 31, 2015, at St. Elizabeth Care and Rehabilitation Center in St. Elizabeth. He was born in St. Elizabeth on April 26, 1924, son of the late Phillip and Augusta (Evers) Bax.

PFC Leonard Bax served in the United States Army during WWII from May 23, 1944 until his honorable discharge on January 31, 1946. During his active duty he served in Europe with Co. K, 274th Infantry. Co. K relieved units in the Battle of the Bulge having a very rough time in very deep snow. On March 3, during a drive from France to Germany there were enemy pill boxes and mines all around. Leonard stepped on a mine resulting in the loss of one leg and fracturing the other.

Leonard was a lifelong farmer in the Miller County area. He volunteered in various community organizations including serving on the St. Anthony Park Board, MFA Oil Board, Iberia MFA Board, and the ASC program. Leonard was a long-time member of the Marys Home Knights of Columbus, Iberia VFW, and the St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.

He is survived by four brothers, Anthony Bax and wife Jeanie of St. Anthony, Raymond Bax and wife Theresa of Marys Home, Sylvester Bax and wife Margie of Ellisville, and Jerome Bax and wife Theresa of St. Charles; three sisters, Eleanor Bax and husband Leander of Jefferson City, Dorothy Frazier and husband Leo of Greenville, PA, and Mildred Blomberg and husband Harold of St. Anthony; one sister-in-law, Sophia Bax of Defiance; one brother-in-law, Hugo Blomberg of St. Anthony; and many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Catherine Bax and Irene Blomberg and one brother, John Bax.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in St. Anthony. Rev. Joby P. Thomas will officiate. Interment with military honors will be in St. Anthony Cemetery in St. Anthony.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., on Tuesday, June 2, at the St. Anthony Parish Hall.
