Norbert H. Buechter, age 88, of St. Anthony, passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2013, at Miller County Care and Rehabilitation Center in Tuscumbia. He was born in rural Iberia on October 31, 1924, son of the late Joseph Frank and Christine Anna (Ortbals) Buechter. On November 11, 1948, in St. Elizabeth, Norbert married Irene Angeline Kemna, who preceded him in death on January 6, 2005.
PFC Norbert Buechter served in the United States Army in the 30th Infantry Division during World War II from July 1944 until his honorable discharge on December 10, 1945. While serving in the Army he earned three Battle Stars, including the Battle of the Bulge, Battle of Rhineland and Central Germany.
Norbert farmed and worked as a carpenter for many years. He and his wife, Irene, owned and operated Buechter Feed and Grocery in St. Anthony from 1972 until their retirement in 1989. He was a member of the Iberia VFW Post 6167. Norbert was a member of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.
He is survived by two sons, Michael Buechter & wife Josie of Ruidoso, New Mexico and Patrick Buechter and wife Diana of Lake Ozark; five daughters, Linda Volmert and husband Jim of Lake Ozark, Chrissy Smith and husband Dennis of Helotes, Texas, Marlene Bax and husband John of Jefferson City, Colette Hicks and husband Richard of Linn Creek, and Beverly Murray and husband Dennis of Iberia; 21 grandchildren, Heather Luttrell, Madeleine Cochran, Nikki Jones, Amy Wilson, Angie Volmert, Andrew Buechter, Laura Owens, Jocelyn Smith, Jean Christoffe Huser, Adrian Wallen, Charlotte Schaefer, Matt Smith, Brian Bax, Anthony Bax, Bruce Bax, Shonna Rakes, Jamie Geromini, Ian Murray, Brandon Buechter, Ashley Scott, and Emily Doerhoff; 32 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marcella Ewalt of Berrien Springs, Michigan and Elizabeth "Betty" Kemna of St. Elizabeth; two brothers, Alfred Buechter of Ocala, Florida and Hilary Buechter of Union.
He was also preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 31, 2013, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in St. Anthony. Rev. Patrick Shortt will officiate. Interment with military honors will be in St. Anthony Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 5 p.m., on Wednesday, January 30, at St. Anthony Parish Hall.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Miller County Care and Rehabilitation Center Residents' Activity Fund or to St. Anthony Cemetery.
