Okley Kinder, age 87, of Iberia, passed away Tuesday August 4, 2009, at Kansas City VA Medical Center. He was born near Iberia on July 6, 1922, son of the late Marquis Earl and Leftie (Bond) Kinder. On June 16, 1946, in Iberia, Okley married Edna Allene Shelton at Bray's Advent Christian Church.
He was a member of the Iberia VFW and American Legion. He was past Master of the Iberia Masonic Lodge 410 AF and AM and was a member for more than 60 years. He organized the Iberia Chamber of Commerce and was a founding member of the Iberia Lions Club. He was also involved in the Miller County Historical Society. For many years, Okley announced local football games for the Iberia Rangers, and was the official statistician for the Iberia Ranger's basketball team for many years. Okley was very active in Bray's Advent Christian Church, serving as a youth sponsor, elder, deacon, and Sunday school teacher.
He is survived by his wife, Allene; two daughters, Dr. Charlotte Shelton and husband Dr. Jim Moore and Patti Fehlig and husband Mark; four grandchildren, Dr. Matthew Shelton of Houston, Texas, Laura Garfield of Kansas City, Meghan Mitman of Oakland, California, and Mollie Fehlig of Manhattan, New York; four great-grandsons; and many nieces, nephews, family and friends.
He was preceded in death by one brother, James E. Kinder.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 8, 2009, at Bray's Advent Christian Church near Iberia. Rev. Roy Gilkey and Rev. Mike Gardner will officiate. Interment with military honors under the direction of the Iberia VFW Post 6167 and American Legion Post 105 will be in Union Cemetery near Iberia.
Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 7, at Fancher-Rekus Funeral Home in Iberia.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Okley Kinder Youth Scholarship Fund at Bray's Advent Christian Church.
