Robert (Bob) G. Ball, age 90, of Iberia, passed away on Sunday, August, 2, 2015, at St. Elizabeth Care Center. He was born in Latham, Illinois, on December 17, 1924, son of the late Frank and Wilma (Cullen) Ball. On May 24, 1943, in Tampa, Florida, Robert married Helen Virginia Campbell, who preceded him in death on October 7, 2004.
Robert served in the US Navy as a Chief Petty Officer during WWII. After the war he attended NYC in New York City. Robert was a long-time resident of Bethalto, IL and moved to Sarasota, FL in 1984, where he was a member of the Masonic Lodge 406, the Scottish Rite Valley of Southern IL and president of Model T Unit of the Sahib Temple. Robert also served as a Deacon and an Elder at the Beneva Christian Church in Sarasota, FL. While living in Behalto, IL he was Assistant Chief of Police, served as the Civil Defense Director, Police Commissioner and was a Park Board Member.
Robert was active in the Boy Scouts of America, receiving the Scout Statuette Award, Silver Beaver Award, and was also a member of the Order of the Arrow. He was an Eagle Scout and the holder of the Wood Badge.
Robert was a boilermaker by trade and a member of local 483 for 38 years. He worked for Wood River Oil and Refinery for 3 years, Sinclaire Oil and Refinery of 17 years and retired after 20 years of employment with Olin Inc. Robert was a current member of the First Christian Church in Iberia.
He is survived by one son, Mike Ball and wife Margi of Iberia; two granddaughters, Jonna Palmer and husband Mel of Wood River, IL and Terri Simpson of Moro, IL; six great-grandchildren, Robin and Jonathan Armstrong of Wood River, IL., Brittany Hamlin and Colton McGaughey of Moro, IL., Rebeca and Andrew Crites Wood River, IL, Hannah Ball and Ross Simpson both of Moro, IL., and Kohl Palmer of Wood River, IL.; and three great-great-grandchildren, Carson Armstrong, Ava Crites, and Owen Crites; three sisters, Martina Hertz of Florida, Sandra Zeter and husband Norman of New Mexico, and Jean Lolling and husband Wayne of Lincoln, IL.
In addition to his wife Helen of 57 years, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Dale Ball and Trelby Ball.
Visitation will be from 2 to 3 p.m., with a memorial service immediately following at 3 p.m., on Sunday, August 9, 2015, at Fancher-Rekus Funeral Home in Iberia. Rev. Stan Way will officiate.
A graveside service will be held at a later date in Lincoln, Illinois, where he will be laid to rest next to his beloved wife.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Iberia First Christian Church.
