Robert W. Groff, age 89, of Iberia, passed away on Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at Miller County Care and Rehabilitation Center in Tuscumbia. He was born in Iberia on May 16, 1924, son of the late Ben and Isa (Ramsey) Groff. On October 23, 1943, Robert married Martha Esther Atwell, who survives at the home.
Robert graduated from Iberia High School in 1942. He attended the Iberia Academy until he volunteered in the U.S. Army. He served as Staff Sergeant in the United States Army from March 1945 until his honorable discharge in July 1946. After the war he farmed, raising beef, dairy cattle, and fish. He worked at Fort Leonard Wood and retired as an accounting supervisor after 30 years of civil service. After his retirement, Robert enjoyed taking care of his garden, traveling, trout fishing and helping Gene manage the farm.
Robert was a dedicated Christian and a long time member of the Iberia First Christian Church. He was baptized in 1957, and taught Bible Classes until his eyesight failed.
He is also survived by four children, Cindy Mote and husband Lyndon of Iberia, Gene Groff and wife Darlene of Iberia, William Groff and wife Nancy of Peoria, Illinois, and Brenda Tucker and husband John of Jonesboro, Arkansas; nine grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews; and many close friends and fishing buddies.
He was preceded in death by four older sisters, Evelyn Ramsey, Vergie Wright, Grace Thompson, and Louise Woolsey.
Service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, September 20, at Fancher-Rekus Funeral Home in Iberia. Stan Way will officiate. Interment with military honors under the direction of Iberia Post 6167 and American Legion Post 105 will be in Iberia Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 19, at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to the Iberia Cemetery.
