Sherman Reginald Catron, age 89, of Iberia, passed away Sunday, April 15, 2012, at St. Mary's Health Center in Jefferson City. He was born in Iberia on December 5, 1922, son of the late Chester and Mildred (Smith) Catron. On February 14, 1947, in Mountain Home, Arkansas, Sherman married Martha Ahart, who survives at the home.
Sherman served in the European Theater during World War II in the United States Army as a Tec 5. Sherman served from January 15, 1943 until his honorable discharge in December of 1945. During his time in the service he was involved in battles and campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, and Central Europe. His branch of service was the 850 Engineer Aviation Battalion, Headquarters Company England. He was awarded four Bronze Stars and the Good Conduct Medal.
Sherman worked for the Civil Service in Fort Leonard Wood until retiring in 1973. After retiring from the Civil Service, he worked as a Custodian and Bus Driver for the Iberia R-V School District. He also owned and operated Catron Electric until retiring in 1996.
He is also survived by three sons, Roger Catron and wife Mary of Walnut Grove, Garry Catron and wife Cheryl of Orlando, Florida, and Michael Catron and wife Cindy of Eldon; six grandchildren, Alysha Range and husband Dale, Kurt Catron, Gina Grimes and husband Tom, Rick Catron, Joseph Catron, and Aaron Catron and wife Clarissa; and two great-granddaughters, Laikyn Range and Hadley Range.
He was also preceded in death by three sisters, three brothers, and one infant grandson.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, April 19, 2012, at Fancher-Rekus Funeral Home in Iberia. Rev. W. G. McGarity will officiate. Interment with military honors will be in Iberia Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18, at the funeral home.
