Obituary

Velma Veasman Welch, age 93, of Dixon, died Thursday, January 31, 2008, at Dixon Nursing and Rehab. She was born in Iberia on March 5, 1914, a daughter of the late Thomas Benton and Odessa Dakota (Humphrey) Whitaker. She was united in marriage to Raymond C. Veasman on September 23, 1935, who preceded her in death on June 13, 1977. On June 18, 1981, in Rocky Mount, she married Davis C. Welch, who also preceded her in death on July 21, 1991.

Velma became a member of the Brays Advent Christian Church at an early age and later transferred her membership to the First Christian Church in Dixon. She was a hard and faithful worker in both churches for many years. She attended public schools in Brays, the Iberia Academy, junior college in Iberia and the Warrensburg Teachers College. She taught school for 12 years and worked at Fort Leonard Wood for 18 years as a budget analyst. She retired on disability in 1966. She was a charter member and served a number of years on the Dixon Senior Citizens Center Council. She also served on the Mid Ozark Medical Board and was a member of the Dixon Manor Housing Board over 25 years. She was a 50 year member of the Eastern Star and held the offices of District Deputy Grand Matron and Grand Representative. She had a great interest in all community activities and helped many hours when Dixon celebrated its centennial in 1969.

Those who survive her include: two brothers, Archie Whitaker and wife Clarice of Dixon and Leo Whitaker and wife Lorraine of Trenton; two sisters, Gladys Slone of Springfield and Edith Duckworth of Liberty and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

One brother, Calvin Whitaker and four sisters, Erma Williams, Lennie Thompson, Lela Jones and Norma Whitaker also preceded her in death.

Visitation will be from 1-2 p.m. on Saturday, February 2, with services immediately following at 2:00 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Dixon. Pastor Wilbur Warman and Pastor Duane Mitchell will officiate. Interment will be in Union Cemetery near Iberia.

Memorial contributions are suggested to Union Cemetery Fund.
