Vera (Porter) Martin, age 99, of Columbia formerly of Iberia, passed away on Sunday, December 28, 2014, at Lenoir Woods in Columbia. She was born in Iberia on August 28, 1915, daughter of the late Roy and Nellie Porter. On January 5, 1934, in Pilot Grove, Vera married Glen Arthur Martin who preceded her in death on October 22, 1993.
Mrs. Martin was a primary teacher at Iberia Public School for eight years. She was associated with her parents in the Porter Mercantile business for eight years and also assisted her husband Glen, who owned and operated the Miller County Sentinel.
From 1943 to 1946 the Martins lived at Fort Ord, California, where Mr. Martin was stationed with the U.S. Army during World War II. In 1973, the Martins moved from Iberia to Jefferson City where she worked for the Missouri State government. In 1990, the Martens moved to the Lenoir Retirement Community in Columbia.
Mrs. Martin was a member of the Iberia Congregational Christian Church. Since 1939 she was a member of the Iberia Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star where she had served as Worthy Matron.
She is survived by four nieces, Roberta Pemberton, Patsy Law, Laura Jo Phillips, and Dolores Amos; and several great-nieces, great-nephews, family and friends.
She was also preceded in death by one brother, Quentin Porter and two nieces, Betty Robertson and Constance Grouns.
Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m., with a memorial service immediately following at 2 p.m., on Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Fancher-Rekus Funeral Home in Iberia. Paul Prater will officiate. Inurnment will be in Iberia Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions are suggested to Iberia Cemetery Perpetual Care Fund.
