Obituary

Victor J. Otto, age 90, of St. Thomas passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2015, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in St. Anthony on July 19, 1924, son of the late Michael and Martha (Rehagen). On October 5, 1949, in St. Thomas, Victor married Rita Marie Groner, who survives at the Otto home.

Victor served in the United States Army during WWII from April 24, 1945 until his honorable discharge on December 27, 1946. During his military service he received the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon, Victory Medal and Occupation Medal of Japan.

He served on the St. Thomas Fire Board for many years. He was a life-long farmer, mechanic, and truck driver in the St. Thomas area and was also a school bus driver for over 40 years. Victor was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church and a past member of St. Thomas Knights of Columbus.

In addition to his loving wife, Rita Otto, he is survived by seven children, Virginia Holtmeyer and husband Roman of Meta, Leroy Otto and wife Linda of Meta, Norman Otto and wife Vallie Don of St. Thomas, Jeanette Goeller and husband Andrew of St. Thomas, Douglas Otto and wife Karen of St. Thomas, David Otto and wife Sara of St. Thomas, and Michael Otto and wife, Cheri of St. Thomas; one son-in-law, Daniel Holtmeyer of St. Anthony; 21 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren with two on the way; three step-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Elias Otto and wife Marilyn of St. Anthony, Fred Otto and wife Mary Ann of Eldon, and Charles Otto and wife Bea of St. Anthony; and one sister, Cecilia Brand of St. Anthony.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Viola Holtmeyer; two granddaughters, Tammy Lynn Holtmeyer and Francie Don Otto; three brothers, Emil, Lawrence, and Roman Otto; and three sisters, Regina Herx, Bernadine Groner, and Rose Werdehausen.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 20, at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in St. Thomas. Rev. Jeremy Secrist will officiate. Interment with military honors will be in St. Thomas Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, June 19, at the church.
