Virgil P. McDowell, age 97, of Iberia, passed away on Friday, May 16, 2014, at Miller County Care and Rehabilitation Center in Tuscumbia. He was born in Pulaski County on June 5, 1916, son of the late John and Ruby McDowell. On September 5, 1936, in Pulaski County, Virgil married Edith Lucinda Sauls, who preceded him in death on August 23, 2002.
Virgil was a member of Hoisting and Portable Engineers Local Union No. 101.
He is survived by one granddaughter, Tammie M. Duncan and husband Tracy of Iberia; one great-granddaughter, Samantha Smoot of Iberia; one great-grandson, Matthew Liebrum of Iberia; six great-great-grandchildren, Aaron Liebrum, Abigail Liebrum, Ethan Leibrum, AvaLynn Liebrum, Dylan Smoot, and Madeline Smoot; two brothers, J.D. McDowell of Kansas and Robert McDowell of Brumley; and one sister, Dorothy Lathrop of Hawkeye.
He was also preceded in death by one son, Jack McDowell.
Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., with services immediately following at 11 a.m., on Monday, May 19, at Fancher-Rekus Funeral Home in Iberia. Virgil Dennis will officiate. Interment will be in Hawkeye Cemetery in Hawkeye.
