Senior Chief Petty Officer William L. Hedgpeth, Jr., age 94, of Iberia, passed away on Monday, September 19, 2022, at Lake Regional Health System in Osage Beach. He was born in Campbell, MO on February 27, 1928, son of the late William Louis Hedgpeth Sr. and Margaret Elizabeth (Hartwell) Hedgpeth. On November 8, 1950, he was married to Barbara Nell Cargal, (now divorced). On July 8, 1981, in Chula Vista, California, he was united in marriage to Eunice V. Wilson nee Barr, who preceded him in death on June 29, 2002.
Mr. Hedgpeth joined the U.S. Navy on March 1945 in St. Louis, making the Navy his career, retiring in June 1966 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. During his military career he served in WWII, Korea, and the Vietnam War on several ships, escort carriers, destroyers, and a heavy cruiser.
Mr. Hedgpeth was awarded many medals and certificates throughout his distinguished career and one of his most cherished is the American Flag that was flown over the Battleship U.S.S. Arizona (BB39) in his honor.
He is survived by his daughter, Raenel Wilde of the State of California; stepdaughter, Anita L. Maples of Eldon; three grandsons; two step-grandsons; three step-granddaughters, ten step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by his son, Michael Hedgpeth.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m., with services immediately following at 2 p.m., on Wednesday, September 28, at Fancher-Rekus Funeral Home in Iberia with Dennis Nichols officiating. Interment with military honors will be held at Iberia Cemetery.
